Jeff Mitchell has alerted us to a new fund raising opportunity: 'FUNDrive', sponsored by Savers Thriftstore Company. Savers will pay local non profits 20 cents per pound for clothing and household items. This is a very eco-friendly program and will help us replace some of the funds we're losing due to the Covid-related cancellation of other fund raisers we normally participate in. Jeff will stage the donations at his home and then will deliver them to the drop-off site. Just bring your items (nothing bigger than a microwave, please) to any Club meeting through March, or contact Jeff at (630) 297-9204 to make arrangements to get them to him.
Maximize your dollars for charity through Amazon Smile
When you make a purchase using Amazon, if you use the Amazon Smile link, a small % of the purchase price will be given to a 501(c)3 charity by Amazon. The purchase price of the Amazon item is the same for you, regardless if you make the purchase using an Amazon Smile link or not. There is no extra cost to you to sign up and make your purchase. You just set your Amazon account to select 'Rotary Foundation of Rotary International' as the non-profit that you want your contribution to go to. According to the last quarterly report from Amazon, since Amazon has had the 'Smile' program there has been a contribution of $54,109.06 given to 'Rotary Foundation of Rotary International'
As of February 24, Jeff Mitchell has presented $695 to the club for his volunteered automotive detailing services. The amount that would normally be paid to Jeff for detailing your car will instead be paid to the club. One member mentioned that she hardly recognized her car when he finished with it! Jeff has extended his offer through the month of March, and is also now doing external waxing. You can contact him at (630) 297-9204 to get on his schedule.
Lost Dutchman Virtual Marathon
The Club has provided all of the volunteers to operate the 8K Trail Run portion of the Lost Dutchman Marathon for the past 20 years. Due to COVID, the 2021 races were VIRTUAL, and our 8K volunteers were not needed. Canadian Rotarian Don Terrant, a long-time volunteer for our club on the 8K who stayed in Canada this winter due to Covid, still managed to participate, and represent Rotary in the race by running a virtual 8K in Victoria, BC. Great job, Don!
Harvey Clark represented the Club at a recent Apache Junction City Council meeting award event, where the Club was thanked by Apache Junction Mayor, Chip Wilson for our donation to 'Friends of Apache Junction' of $500 to be used for replacing PPE equipment in vehicles used by the Apache Junction Police.
The focus of the meeting was an introduction and review of a variety of Club resources that are available to Club members. Among these are the Club website https://superrotary.com/ and the Club FaceBook page - https://www.facebook.com/SuperRotary. Some of the features discussed included how Club members can update their personal information on the Club website and review who the upcoming speakers are slated to be.
Highlights of February 17 Meeting
We were excited to induct 2 new members into the Club! As part of the meeting, each new member shared some background and/or interesting tidbits about their lives and/or experiences, which was a great opportunity for the other Club members to become better acquainted with them. Welcome to the Club, Natalie and Steve!
Natalie Ackerly (along with Torrie, her 4-legged buddy) has been involved as a 'Pet Therapy Team' member at Gateway Airport for the past 3 years. 'Gateway AVIATORS C.A.R.E.' Team (Canines Around Relaxing Everyone) - handlers and their dogs roam the passenger terminal during periods of peak flight activity to help de-stress and relax passengers. In addition, handlers are trained and assist passengers with airport questions and directions. C.A.R.E. Team members and their dogs volunteer for a minimum of two hours weekly.
Steve Gorman has previously been a Rotary member in another Club for about 10 years. Born in North Dakota, after graduating from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, he joined his family's 4th generation cabinet making business. Moving to Minnesota, he and his wife raised 4 children, and he got involved in the flour milling business, becoming VP of Sales at Cargill's flour milling division (largest privately held corporation in the United States). During his extensive business travels, he and his wife found and loved Arizona -- and ended up living in the Gold Canyon area.
