We held our first Club social on October 8th at Handlebar Pub & Grill in Apache Junction. A good time was had by all.
On Saturday morning October 5th, Rotarians from Superstition Mountain Rotary Club participated in Make a Difference Day 2024.
This event brings together volunteers from the city, faith community, clubs and organizations, non-profits, businesses, and individual volunteers, who all participate in a common mission. The volunteers contribute time and energy to help make a difference in meeting the needs of our community.
Work sites included cleaning up some areas of community parks, removing trash from some neighborhood communities, trail maintenance, planting native plant species, removing invasive plant species, and more. The event is a partnership with the City of Apache Junction, focusing on conservation, cleanup, and beautification of areas within city limits.
John Ockenfels and Peter Teahen, who spoke to the Club via Zoom, shared information about an amazing adventure they experienced that combined their passion for flying small airplanes with raising funds and awareness for Rotary's End Polio efforts.
On July 30, 2023, John and Peter completed a daunting mission when they landed their single-engine airplane back home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had flown a Cessna T210M craft all the way around the world, after taking off from Cedar Rapids on May 5, 2023. Out of the 7.4 billion people on earth, only 702 pilots have flown around the world in a light aircraft.
Throughout the entire trip, the pilots fostered awareness for polio eradication, raised funds for Rotary's End Polio efforts, and even administered some vaccines to children in need. Both Peter, a long time Rotarian from District 5970, and John, a Past District Governor from District 6000, are pilots and members of the Fellowship of Flying Rotarians. Polio eradication has been a primary focus of Rotary for over 35 years and continues to be a major initiative. While the end of polio may be near, the goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to be vaccinated.
Superstition Mountain Rotary Club's October 23rd meeting was fortunate to have two speakers - Kolton Scherbenske, a Member Consultant from 'ArchWell Health' and Cyndy Campbell, an Independent Agent from 'Presley General Insurance Agency, Inc.' Their topic was 'Making Medicare Easy'.
Kolton shared information about Archwell Health's business model of providing primary health care services all in one place for seniors, and how Medicare plans work with their business model.
Cyndy shared information about Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, as well as tips to help individuals sift through the often confusing terms and options and be able to decide what is right for them and their circumstances.
We were fortunate to have two speakers: Marin Lasater, Community Engagement Coordinator, and Dana Martinez, Director of Shelter Services, from Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA).
Communities are made stronger when families are safe, have a secure home, can provide for themselves and their children, and are ultimately given a chance to make a brighter future for themselves. By offering these compassionate services, CAAFA/A New Leaf helps households move from crisis to stability, making our community a better place to live. Since 1971, 'CAAFA /A New Leaf' has assisted those in our community who are in need, helping families, children, and adults overcome their challenges.
Jessica Fendley spoke about her experiences with firefighting for pretty much her entire life. As the daughter of the Queen Valley Fire Captain, Jessica has been involved in a variety of volunteer firefighting tasks. She is experienced and skilled in dealing with saws and the tasks of sawing down trees and brush as a part of firefighting. Many of the firefighting adventures she spoke of were scary. We are all very appreciative of the efforts of Jessica, and other volunteer firefighters who spend countless hours working to keep us all safe during fire emergencies.
Her knowledge of firefighting saws and equipment was initially the path that brought her to her present occupation as store Manager of the Kabat Frontier Ace Hardware store in Apache Junction.
We were excited to have 2024-25 Rotary District 5495 Governor Michelle Holcomb as our speaker.
Michelle has been a member of The Rotary Club of Fountain Hills since 2010. She served as Club President in 2015-16, 2016-17, Co-President in 2018-19, and again in 2021-22. She also has served as a Rotary District 5495 Assistant Governor, and is a graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute and the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS).
The 2024-25 Rotary year theme is 'The Magic of Rotary'. Michelle encouraged all Rotarians to serve others and share the magic of Rotary. Michelle's theme for 2024-25 is 'Rotary Means Business'. Some focus areas will include promoting vocational scholarships with The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona (TRVFA), entrepreneurship with the Rotary District 5495 micro-credit program, small business community development, mentoring programs, and local networking.
