January 26 Meeting
Our Zoom speakers included Past District Governor Stu Palmer (District 5440), from the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole, WY, along with his team, Ken Small, from the Rotary club of St Petersberg, FL (also a Past District Govenor of District 5440) , Gavin Keeton (President of the Rotary Club of Grahamstown South Africa), as well as Glen Arthur, Julia Heemstra and Nicci Hayes (members of Rotary Club of Grahamstown South Africa). Their presentation focused on progress being made in an international water filter project that benefits schools in the Grahamstown, South Africa area. The group pointed out that water and water filtration is crucial to the ability of schools to operate. The project is approaching its fundraising goal of $400,000 and will offer better educational opportunities to the nearly 4500 students in the Grahamstown area. Rotary International and various Rotary grants are involved to try and provide better access to this scarce resource and help to improve it's management.
The
Club was also visited by AJHS Student Council members Kendall Powell (Current Vice President), Victoria Canzona (Co-Senior Class President) and Kaitlyn Small (Senior Class President ). They spoke to the group about the AJHS upcoming Leadership Training they are co-ordinating and doing fundraising for. Their trip will be to visit Walt Disney corporate offices at Disneyland Resort in California. During their visit they will learn more about the Disney business by speaking with Disney executives to learn what it takes to become a good leader. They will also be learning more about what Walt Disney did in his life/business to build the business empire he was able to accomplish. Their goal is to bring this new knowledge back into their lives, school, and community as they move forward into college and professional lives. The Club was pleased to be able to help them with a donation this year to assist with their trip costs. If others in the local community would like to financially help these students and their upcoming leadership trip, contact AJHS for more information about how you can help to fund the students and their trip.

The meeting this week was a Club Assembly with discussion of Club goals and a focus on building important teams and committees. Terralle Moore and Bob Benjamin reminded members about the need for volunteers for the upcoming, February 20th Lost Dutchman Marathon and 8k portion of the race, which Superstition Mountain Rotary has been actively participating in as volunteers for the past 20 years. Ron Knies also reminded members about the upcoming Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo, February 25-27th. There is also still a need for volunteers during all 3 days of the event.District Governor Bret McKeand visited the club and presented us with awards for 100% member participation in Foundation giving, and for being number 1 in the district in per capita Annual Fund giving.
January 12 Meeting
Our meeting was a Zoom only meeting due to Covid concerns. Since the intended program wasn't conducive to a virtual format, we had an informal agenda consisting of general updates:- A brief recap of the December 18th Superstition Mountain Rotary 21st Annual Charity Golf tournament was given.
- Bob Benjamin reminded attendees about the need for volunteers at the upcoming, February 20th Lost Dutchman Marathon and 8k portion of the race, which Superstition Mountain Rotary has been actively participating as volunteers for the past 20 years.
- Jeff Mitchell mentioned the need for volunteers for the upcoming Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo, February 25-27th.
- Bryant Powell reminded the Club that AJ Police Chief Tom Kelly is retiring and that on the evening of January 18th at 7pm the AJ City Council is planning a little event as a thank you to him, which people are welcome to attend.
- Bryant also announced that the next Citizens Leadership Academy (CLI) is just beginning. Natalie Ackerly is participating, and others in the Club have participated in the past.
- Lee Holmes announced a number of upcoming Rotary District events, along with info for attending.
- John Raine updated the Club about the Superstition Mountain Museum and a number of events that will be happening there in the next few weeks.
January 5 Meeting

r speaker was Carlo Karmin, Managing Partner of the Gold Canyon Golf Resort. Carlo has been with the Resort for the past 22 years. The Resort has been the location of the club's weekly meetings for the past many years. Prior to being with the Resort, Carlo was with the New York Hilton and Arizona Biltmore. The Resort was originally called Kings Ranch with initially only a golf course, and later the Resort added lodging and rooms. Carlo shared many entertaining stories about how the Resort has evolved over the years. The Resort is 450 acres with 2 major golf courses, and on average there are about 75,000 rounds of golf played annually. Interestingly, Carlo shared that during Covid, golfing has increased as people found golf to be a great activity/sport that could be enjoyed outdoors while social-distancing.
