Apache Junction Unified School District School Superintendent, Dr. Robert Pappalardo, provided an update about the Apache Junction Unified School District to the Club. Dr. Pappalardo stressed the District's commitment to provide consistent intentional opportunities for every student with clear pathways for educational and personal development at every level - from elementary school through graduation, as well as programs designed to help take them into their future careers.
At every level, all decisions are grounded in one principal -- Kids First. As a community, there are many ways we can help our schools and students - whether through volunteering, cheering on students at their events, or making a contribution through the Arizona tax credit program, or other opportunities as they arise.
Liz Lagenbach, Apache Junction Director of Parks and Recreation, gave an update on the development and growth of Apache Junction.
The newest housing development, located in Blossom Rock at Superstition Vistas, includes additional new homes, parks and recreation areas, including 16-acre Painted Sky Park, which is the first of three planned parks for the development.
Apache Junction now has 2 dog parks; Dutchman Dog Park, and the newly added Painted Sky Dog Park in the new development. One popular offering allows residents to book a private area/time for just their dog, or their dog, plus their friends, and events such as dog birthday parties!
The Apache Junction Rodeo grounds are in a multi-stage improvement project. Over time, there will be upgrades to water and electrical systems, ADA-accessible walkways/parking, dedicated vendor walkways, a covered ramada, along with updated lighting, which will take into account 'dark skies'.
As the area continues to grow, with additional homes in the master-planned Radiance community, there will be additional parks and trails. Apache Junction takes great pride in their well maintained parks and recreation areas for residents to enjoy.
Terri Sue Rossi, Vice-President-Water Resources and Raluka Mihalcescu, Water Conservation Administrator, gave an informative and insightful update about water resources in our area and the Arizona Water Company.
The club enjoyed a great presentation by Janeane Moreno and Bryan Seppala from Resolution Copper, located in Superior, Arizona. Janeane and Bryan provided an update on the Resolution Copper Mine Project, which creates a large number of jobs for individuals in our local East Valley communities. Additionally, they are committed to ongoing community dialog and to developing partnerships that bring lasting benefits to the entire region.
The Resolution Copper deposit ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 ft (1,500 to 2,130 m) below the surface and the proposed underground mine is expected to become the largest copper mine in North America, supplying copper that’s critical to everyday life. Their aim is for the mine to produce as much as 40 billion pounds of copper over 40 years.
