Lost Dutchman Marathon 8K Trail Run

Our club handled the water tables and marshal roles for the 8K trail run portion of the Lost Dutchman Marathon on Sunday, February 20th. This is an important event for the community. Since its inception in 2002, the marathon has donated over $778,000 to various local organizations that serve economically disadvantaged youth. Not only do we provide a great service, but we also get funds from this event to use for our own projects. Thanks go out to everyone who came out and helped -- and to Terralle Moore for all your hard work in getting us organized!

Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo

We once again managed the beer stations at the Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo on February 24-26. The many volunteer hours involved in this endeavor bring valuable funds into the club for our worthy causes. Thanks to Ron Knies and Jacquie Smith for your management of the event, and to everyone who came out to help!

Gordon Barnard was our speaker, and told us 'Secrets from a Commercial Airline Pilot'. Now retired from the airlines, Gordon spent his career working as a commercial airline pilot. His job took him to a lot to routes focusing on destinations/locations in the South East and Far East.

He provided a number of interesting and entertaining stories about life in the skies. Gordon also shared a lot of general  information about how airline training and job requirements have changed over the years. Club members enjoyed his many stories of life in the sky.

Kendall Powell accepted a donation made by the Club to help support AJHS Student Council and students for their upcoming trip/learning experience to Walt Disney corporate offices at DisneyLand Resort in California, where the students will have the opportunity to learn leadership skills from their management teams.

February 8

Our speaker was Club member, Kathy Hansen, who provided an interesting Classification Talk. Club members enjoyed the opportunity to get to know more about Kathy and her background.

Kathy is being pro-active in becoming involved with Club service projects and we're excited to put her to work!

February 1

Our speaker was Gem Munro, from 'Amarok Society'. The mission of 'Amarok Society' is  'Teach Mothers to Teach The World'.

Gem Munro, alongside his wife, Tanyss, have spent their life standing up for human rights and human potential. Gem is a best-selling author. His novels portray remote Arctic Indigenous communities, South Asian mega-slums, and Canada's urban racism.

In 2005, an international organization invited them to make improvements to the Bangladesh education system. They packed up their 4 children and moved from Vancouver, Canada to Dhaka, Bangladesh. They found children there were not in school. An innovative approach was needed -  teach mothers to teach others. In Jan 2006 they opened the first school for mothers --- teaching mothers, who in turn could teach their children.
