We had three guests today - all spouses of club members:  Diane Dungan, Jenny Crow and our speaker Dorothy Homann. 
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CLUB BUSINESS

1. President Len welcomed our three guests all of whom are spouses of club members:  Diane Dungan, Jenny Crow and Dorothy Homann.
2. This is Brian Killgore's next-to-last meeting before he and his wife relocate to California.  Brian's replacement at AJUSD has been hired and he will try to interest her in becoming a member of Rotary.
3. President Len presented Mike Dungan with a Rotary tie, A Rotary cap and a Rotary plaque as a small way of saying "Thank You!" to Mike for his 10 consecutive years of service as Sargeant-at-Arms.  Mike's sense of timing and quick wit kept us laughing and made Rotary always a pleasant place to be.  Thanks for all of it Mike from all of us!
4. Larry Johnson asked club members to participate in the Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament to be held at Encanterra Country Cub on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014.  Golfers and sponsors are needed.  Save the date!
5. Aaron McDermid our new Sargeant-at-Arms did the fund-raising duties.  Thanks for stepping up Aaron!
6. Dan Govinsky won the drawing and $10.  The pot was worth $292 today if the Joker should appear but Dan drew the 5 of clubs.
7. After the meeting, a huddle was held to discuss new developments in the formation of an Interact Club at Apache Junction H.S.  Things are looking the most hopeful they have in a while.
 
 
 
SPEAKER

Today's speaker was Dorothy Homann speaking on the topic "Dinosaurs - Do You Dig 'Em".  She has been participating as a knowledgeable volunteer for 20 + years on Concordia College dinosaur digs.

She described three sites, each in a different state, where she helped excavate three distinct types of dinosaurs.  The first was a private land site on the Grand River in South Dakota.  It was a dinosaur graveyard of many Edmontosaurus duck-billed dinosaurs (plant eaters).  The three feet deep bone bed was in the Hell Creek formation which dates from the Cretaceous period.  The bones of many animals were mixed together in a random way.  They were disarticulated and lay on top of one another.  She showed pictures of bones in the lab of Edmontosaurus hands, feet. legs and skulls that had been cleaned and preserved.  The second dino site was on public land in Wyoming and required a permit to dig.  This site featured an Allosaurus which is a large meat-eater.  Here the bones were all from one animal but were still scattered rather randomly.  The third site was on a private ranch in Montana in the Missouri breaks area.  Here they found a frill and rib bones of a Triceratops.
 
Dorothy explained the process of dino digging: Doing reconnaissance to find bone fragments that have washed out from the terrain or following up on landowner reports of finds; removing overburden; carefully excavating bone finds and documenting the exact location and orientation of each one; protecting the bones for removal from the site and transport to a lab; cleaning, repairing and sealing bones for display or storage; assembling bones into complete skeletons for display.
