Our speaker of the day was Steve Gable who was assisted by his wife Bonnie on the projector. Steve showed pictures of the devastation in Tacloban City on Leyte Island in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Yolanda on November 7, 2013. The storm – the most powerful to ever hit land– had winds of 225 mph for 5 hours, followed by three two-story tidal waves. There were an estimated 10,000 killed with around 1800 unaccounted for. An estimated 414,000 people were left homeless. Two months before Yolanda struck; the area was struck by a 7.8 earthquake.
In February of this year the Gables went with a group of Philippino dentists and other Rotarians on a Dental Mission to Panglao Island Municipality and Cebu. Their third week was planned as a relaxing stay on a beach, but Typhoon Yolanda wiped out their beach resort, so they joined a group of US doctors and moved their clinic to Tacloban, the epicenter of Yolanda. During their time in the Philippines, they performed over 5000 proceedures during their 10 days of dental clinics.
They both returned home with some life changing experiences and a better understanding of why we do what we do as Rotarians.
