After attending an Arizona State Park Board meeting, Mark and other community leaders determined that community funds could be raised and used to fund park operations … and the park could remain open. The next step was forming a non-profit organization – Friends of Lost Dutchman State Park. Mark is a founding board member and President of the organization.

No stranger to community involvement, the LaResches’ business, Superstition Harley-Davidson, hosts a number of fundraising events in support of a wide range of causes. Adding events targeted to support the effort to raise funds for the park fit right into the active community culture of their business.

Lost <st1:ST1:ST1:PLACE w:st="on"><st1:ST1:ST1:PLACENAME w:st="on">Dutchman <st1:ST1:ST1:PLACETYPE w:st="on">State Park fundraising events generally consist of several hundred Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts participating in a Poker Run or Destination Ride. Winners of these events walk away with a few hundred dollars … but the real winner is the park. One event can easily generate eight thousand dollars that go directly to supporting park operations. While 35 jobs at the park are being saved, the benefit to the community is tremendous. All of our local businesses, especially those catering to tourism visitors, are healthier because the park is open.

In recognition for their contribution to keeping the park open as a tourism destination … the Arizona Office of Tourism awarded Beverley and Mark LaResche the “Special Events – Rural” Award for the Superstition Harley-Davidson Lost Dutchman State Park Observation Ride.

Due to their efforts outdoor activities at the Park, such as those scheduled for next month, are still a part of our community.
