James A. Erickson District Governor Designate 2017-2018

Jim Erickson appeared before the Nominating Committee on February 7, 2015 and
was duly selected to be the District Governor for 2017 – 2018.
He was born in Milwaukee, WI and was active in all sports in high school. Most
notably, Jim achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and attended the Boy Scout
National Jamboree in Colorado Springs. This was his first exposure to the Air
Force Academy where he later graduated and entered military service.
Upon graduation Jim was stationed at Williams Air Force Base. While undergoing
pilot training Jim met the love of his life, Maryann. They have been married
since July 1971 and have one son, Robert.
One of Jim’s athletic claims to fame is that he tried out for the US Olympic
Curling Team – no joy, but lots of memories.
After a few years in the Air Force, Jim left the service and took over his
father’s business in Wisconsin and managed it for 30 years.
Jim is a third generation Rotarian following his grandfather and father. His
father was the president and first Paul Harris Fellow in the Menomonee Falls
Rotary Club where Jim also served as president in 1985 – 1986. He has also
served as an Assistant Governor in District 6270 in Wisconsin.
In late 2006, Jim moved his family to Arizona and soon joined the Superstition
Mountain Rotary Club. He led the Group Study Exchange team to Switzerland and
Liechtenstein in 2009.
Having a seasoned Rotary veteran in their midst, Jim was elected President of
the Superstition Mountain club for 2009 – 2010. He continued to serve after that
for 3 years as an Assistant Governor thus maintaining his almost 38 years of
perfect attendance with a goal of 50 years.
We are fortunate here in District 5510 to have such a passionate and dedicated
Rotary to serve as our District Governor in 2017 – 2018. Jim looks forward to
meeting all the Rotarians in our district and working with the clubs to further
enhance the Objects of Rotary.

Bryant Powell receives Outstanding Assistant Manager Award

Bryant Powell, Apache Junction’s Assistant City Manager, was awarded the Catherine F.

Connolly Outstanding Assistant City/County Manager Award in a ceremony last Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015.

The Arizona City/County Management Association (ACMA) presented the award, which recognizes an outstanding assistant city or county manager who has demonstrated exemplary service to their organization, community, local government and ACMA.

Always focused on improving Apache Junction, Powell is the fist ICMA-Credentialed manager in the history of the city.

“Bryant values the public good and looks for opportunities—both within and beyond the organization—to advance it” shared Apache Junction City Manager George Hoffman. “Bryant represents what is best about our profession: purpose, passion, commitment and competence. His contributions to our organization and the profession give me great hope for the future of our community.” Powell served as the senior budget & management analyst for the city of San Antonio, Texas before coming to Apache Junction. He’s made significant improvements to routine operations for Apache Junction as well as the city’s long-term planning. He was instrumental in the implementation of the city’s capital facilities plan. His leadership and involvement resulted in the fist LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certifid city hall in Arizona, improvements to the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds and the construction of the MultiGenerational Center (MGC) and the Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center.

Powell has also worked closely with the city council over the past several years to develop a strategy for addressing the dire need for roadway improvements. Facing major budget limitations due to state sweeps and decreases in HURF (Highway User Revenue Funding), Powell’s diligence led to the successful implementation of a plan that will result in Apache Trail being repaved this summer and other roadway improvements. Beyond Powell’s involvement in large scale projects, he continues to improve the operations of the organization including increased communication with community partners and city employees.

Powell has held leadership positions and made significant contributions to organizations beyond the city of Apache Junction. Some of his activities include serving as the ex official for the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce board, a member of the East Valley Partnership board, serving on the Pinal County First Things First Regional Council, Arizona City Managers Association Conference Planning Chair and serving on Superstition Mountain Rotary, currently as the club president
