GUESTS AND VISITORS
Aaron McDermid brought his mother Lynn McDermid along as his guest.  Lynn is from Portland, OR.  It may be the first time we have had a club member's Mom as a guest.
IT WAS A GREAT DISTRICT CONFERENCE!!
Our members who attended the District Conference in Flagstaff returned full of renewed enthusiasm for what Rotary is all about.  There were about 150 Rotarians registered for the event and every club in the district was represented.  The conference was fun, fast-moving and inspirational.  It featured great speakers and great music.  Interacters, Rotoractors and exchange students were all represented.  Representing Superstition Mountain were: Jim and Maryann Erickson, Harvey Clark, Jay and Carol Jones, Ed and Cassandra Shockley and Bob and Jennie Crow.

Our club received the "100% Foundation Giving Award" for the previous Rotary year.  Below Jay Jones presents it to President Ed Shockley.
Jim Erickson was prominently featured in the District program. Jim will be the District Governor for our combined districts in 2018-19.  You will find some interesting background on Jim in the photo below.  By the way - Jim surprised his wife Maryann with a Paul Harris award - the last one to be given by District 5510.

Our club took out an ad in the program thanking Dr. Tonya Watson for her service as governor this Rotary year.
USING FACEBOOK TO BUILD OUR CLUB
As part of our Club Assembly today, Aaron McDermid gave us a tutorial on how to use Facebook to showcase what we are about as a club. It can also be used to interest potential members who share our values and commitments.
Our Facebook page is at Superstition Mountain Rotary Club.  Aaron encouraged club members to post photos and/or comments on our page and to "share" club doings with your personal group of Facebook friends.  If you need help, Aaron or other club members who use Facebook regularly can help you.  To participate, you need to become a member of Facebook yourself.
THE DECLARATION OF ROTARIANS IN BUSINESS AND THE PROFESSIONS
As another part of our Club Assembly, Mike Dungan made a presentation on "The Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and the Professions".  Mike has a framed copy of the declaration on his office wall and he thinks that all club members would be well-served to put one on their office walls as a statement of their ethical beliefs.  It is now being included in our new member packets.  The Declaration, along with the 4-Way Test, are moral codes for all aspects of our lives but with particular emphasis on our business and professional lives.
Mike went on to make the case that joining a Rotary club is like entering a contractual agreement that requires a member to make a personal commitment to the causes and activities of Rotary.  He would like to see each club member commit to at least two projects in writing and to expect to be called to fulfill the personal obligations pledged therein.

Mike made these specific recommendations to improve the club:
1. Each week, send a general club email blast announcing the next four weeks of scheduled speakers.  Include the Secretary for each valley club as well as Superior, Globe and Florence. In addition, include previous speakers.
2. One month prior to our club's new leadership installation in July, send a general club email blast listing the various activities we endorse and requesting each member to pick at least 2-4 activities for the year.  Print, sign the form and return to our Secretary.  It is then the activity director's responsibility to keep his "committed cats corralled".
3. Members who have been lax in attendance should be contacted by phone by the Sargent-at-Arms or a designated deputy.  A follow-up visit from a couple of Rotarians may help discover if the club is failing this member in some way.
4. The form in 2 above should be filled out when a person joins the club and annually thereafter.

PRESIDENT ED'S GOOD-BYE AND THANK YOU!

Len LaFlesch gave a humorous presentation of how President Ed had been a "hands-on President".  Len used the words "hand" or "hands" in 25 or more sayings that described Ed's presidency.

Then Harvey Clark presented Ed with a plaque of thanks from the club for Ed's service.
President Ed then went around the room naming each member and mentioning some of their contributions to the success of our club.  It was impressive to see the depth of his knowledge of the membership and the way they serve.  Finally, Ed gave us a list of things he thinks would be beneficial to the club in the coming year.
1. Advertise our future speakers (ala Mike Dungan above)
2. Be on a committee.  Chair or co-chair a committee
3. Volunteer to work at our service projects and fund raisers
4. Be generous as a donor
5. Find a speaker
6. Add more service projects - fall event?
7. Put on socials for club members and spouses - Maybe a comedy hour (Dave Webb?)
8. Maybe support the efforts of the Gilbert club to bring home water sources to Navajo people

THANKS ED FOR A GREAT YEAR!

GOODBYE FAITHFUL FRIEND OTIS
Otis was Len LaFlesch's dog and companion.  After a long, good life, Len recently had to have Otis put to sleep.  Bob Benjamin noted that Otis was a fixture at our club's  water table during the lost Dutchman 8 K Trail Run.  Thank you Otis for your service to Len and to the club.
