Earthheart Park and Community Garden

ImageLess than a year after Mountain Health & Wellness opened its new facility in Apache Junction, it is launching the addition of a community park and garden.  Earthheart Park and Community Garden will be located on four acres of land just north of the new facility.

Gustavo McGrew gave us sense of how the park will relate to the community and how it ties in with the healthcare facility.

The primary goals of the park are to …

  • Provide a community gathering place for physical activity, nutritional awareness and artistic expression
  • Create a safe place to cultivate friendships as well as fresh organic produce
  • Share knowledge related to gardening, food production and water harvesting
The park features include …

  • Xeriscaped landscaping with the majority of desert plants having a nutritional or medicinal use (e.g. mesquite, jojoba, nopal, aloe vera, blue agave, etc.)
  • An ADA compliant walking path
  • Thirty (4’ X 8’) raised garden beds
  • An orchard with 24 fruit trees (including citrus, apple, peach, etc.)
  • An outdoor community kitchen equipped to teach the preparation of fresh food from the garden.
  • A performance area for spoken word, musical and dramatic presentations.
  • A large grass area for seating during performances and for exercising at other times.
  • Open areas to be used for Farmers Markets and art exhibits/sales
Many of the components need to be purchased; trees, garden beds, a tool shed and the outdoor kitchen. Donations toward the purchase of these items are welcome.  Gustavo McGrew is the Senior Director of Wellness Services for Mountain Health & Wellness.
